Our Ship MS FRAM (Hurtigruten)

Updated: Feb 16, 2022

The ship FRAM was named after the original vessel “Fram” that explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen took in 1893 to explore the Artic. Fram in Norwegian means “go ahead”. It was built in Fincantieri, Italy in 2006.

The original FRAM had characteristics that allowed it to be trapped in ice without getting damaged. Amdusen and Nansen were exploring the Artic, they reached position 78 49’N and got trapped in the ice. They turned off their engines and instead of fighting the current, they drifted off with the current. Nansen realized that he needed to continue going ahead with the current to reach the other side of the North Pole. They successfully navigated across the North Pole and discovered that there was no land below the ice cover.
